Sweet and Lowdown combines two of the great talents in recent cinema. Sean Penn proves that there isn't anything on celluloid that he can't feel or express.
His portrait of Emmet Ray is funny and complete down to the last leg and hand gesture. He is one of the two best actors of our time. Sweet and Lowdown displays his incredible range of talent.

Woody Allen is the contemporary equal of intelligent comedy since Billy Wilder died. His scriptwriting is so witty that there isn't anything I can compare it too. His direction is dead on and the film just leaves you with a good feeling in your bones and your brain.
Samantha Morton is amazing in her Oscar nominated performance without even saying a word. Her facial expressions are of such rare quality that very few can do what she did.
Did I mention the music? Well, the music is one of the most sensual jazz guitar solos you will ever hear. Sean Penn is so believable in playing the guitar that I never doubted he could play it. Of course, Allen made a really good choice by beginning the film with Penn playing the guitar in one continuous panning shot eliminating our doubts about his musical talent and ability.
Uma Thurman is the only one that is "acting" but even that can't stop the "soul train" of one of the funniest films in present days.
4 / 5
Director: Woody Allen
Staring: Sean Penn, Samantha Morton, Uma Thurman
