Petra is an archeological city in Jordan and it has been inhabited from 7000 BC.
The Nabataens were nomadic Arabs who settled the area around the 4th century BC.
Petra has been their capital since the 2nd century BC. The Roman Empire conquered the region in the 1st century BC.
The importance of Petra declined as sea trade routes emerged and an earthquake destroyed many structures in 363 AD.
In the Byzantine era, several Christian churches were built, but the city continued to decline and,
by the early Islamic era, it was abandoned.
