Photography | Easter Island
Easter Island (Rapa Nui) is an island of Chile in the Pacific Ocean. The island is most famous for its 1,000+ stone monumental statues, called moai, which were built by the early Rapa Nui people.
The Polynesian inhabitants first reached the island around the year 800. Experts disagree on the actual year. The inhabitants created a thriving and industrious culture, as evidenced by the island's numerous enormous stone moai and other artifacts.
The name Easter Island was given by the Dutch Explorer Jacob Roggeveen, who was the island's first recorded European visitor. He arrived at the island on April 5, 1722 (Easter Sunday).
